Portuguese President springs a surprise at the Blood´less Revolution premiere at Cinema São Jorge
Lisbon's Cinema São Jorge hosted the advance premiere of Revolução (sem) Sangue, in a screening that brought together the director, the cast and the crew alongside guests drawn from the most varied circles — from politics to the arts. The big surprise of the evening was the presence of Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, the President of Portugal. The film opens in Portuguese cinemas on 11 April.
The auditorium filled up for the feature's first public screening, which revisits the story of the young men killed by the PIDE, the secret police of Portugal's Estado Novo dictatorship. Just weeks before the celebrations marking 50 years since the 25th of April, the 1974 Carnation Revolution that ended the regime, the night became far more than a premiere: it was a meeting point between memory and cinema, with different generations and sensibilities gathered in the same space.
The head of state praised the film's courage in humanising the victims, giving them back a face and a story beyond the names recorded in the history books. The director, Rui Pedro Sousa, stressed that the presence of figures of state validates the effort to rewrite the official history with greater rigour and historical justice.
Blood´less Revolution opens in cinemas on 11 April 2024.
